Travel / A French Romance

LA PETITE FRENCH

ROMANCE

Diane Spender and her husband lingered in Languedoc for a weekend without the children and loved it

H

ere’s a suggestion. Take a short flight to Béziers, pick up a hire car and then enjoy a slow drive through the beautiful Languedoc countryside and vineyards. Stop for a moment at a café to marvel at the boats on the Canal du Midi and then, after a refreshing citron pressé, proceed on your journey. Then, when you are just outside of Capestang, turn off the ignition, revel in the silence and look ahead at Château Les Carrasses, the stunning fairytale turreted 19th century castle that you are about to call home for the next few days. Château Les Carrasses is the sort of glamorous continental residence Cary Grant and Grace Kelly would have stayed at in a 1950s screen romance. I was beginning to wish I’d packed a hat and gloves as we were escorted to our apartment, the Bridal Suite or Le Grand Salon, as it is officially known – which was odd for a couple married for 20 years, but who were we to argue? And nor did we as we were rendered totally speechless entering our salon – a two-bedroom apartment, with open-plan kitchen and living area, which was extremely spacious with a pale grey stylish décor and all mod-cons. “What a shame the girls are at home

revising,” I said to Cary, I mean my husband Mike, who was unfazed by their absence and, instead, focused on the amazing views of the infinity pool and vineyards surrounding the château. Of course I had to try out the free-standing bath in the bedroom holding a glass of rosé and then have a nap on the comfiest bed (with an extra soft topping) I have ever slept on. Château Les Carrasses is a luxury family orientated resort, and has been beautifully renovated into 28 stylish suites, apartments and villas. Accommodation ranges from double-bedded apartments to three-bedroom houses in the winery’s old outbuildings, many with private sun terraces and pools. The estate is the perfect mix of selfcatering and hotel facilities, which include that magnificent infinity pool, floodlit clay tennis courts, boules court, barbecue area, complimentary mountain bikes, a kid’s club and bistro and bar. There is everything here you need for a

great family break, too. If you simply want to relax and unwind by the pool, the views from the terrace are best enjoyed with one of the Château’s house wines, made with grapes grown in the surrounding vineyards. There was a wine tasting prior to dinner on Friday night, one of a planned series of events to make the Château a centre of both local and visitor interest. Cuisine being at the heart of everyday life here, dinner at its brasserie was wonderful, offering fresh Mediterranean dishes using local produce with tapas style starters, followed by a slow cooked lamb, in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. There is also a good choice of fish on the menu. If you can tear yourself away from the pool, the bed, the wine glass... there are plenty of things to keep you busy in the area, and hotel manager Lucy and her excellent team were always on hand with great advice. Our first experience of this region was of Poilhes, the laid-back sleepy French village, where we stopped for a delicious lunch and

our fifth (I think) glass of rosé at La Tour Sarrasine, positioned in a lovely location along the banks of the Canal du Midi. Pézenas has the best market to go to in Languedoc on a Saturday morning, as it takes over the whole of the town centre and offers a great range of regional food, clothing, flowers and general knick-knacks. A short drive from Les Carrasses brings you to the golden stretch of sand on the Mediterranean coast. Wander along the quays of Marseillan port and allow yourself to be transported by the gentle sound of water lapping on the boat hulls. The surrounding restaurants offer delicious fish of all kinds and one shouldn’t miss a tour of La Maison Noilly Prat to discover the history and traditional craft of one of the first French vermouths. Minerve is a picturesque fortified medieval village situated on top of the gorge of the River Cesse and is a must-see. On our final day, we went over to the sister estate, Chateau St Pierre de Serjac, a magnificent château estate, which mirrors the style of Les Carresses. The pool and view are to die for; an excellent infinity pool and views over the vineyards. We were shown around by marketing manager Darren, who explained how

the château had been renovated into what it is today, with an extremely inviting spa that is open to all the guests. You can book a variety of treatments, from deep pore facials to energising scrubs, but I opted for a relaxing Moroccan argan oil massage, followed by an outstanding three-course lunch in the restaurant. All of these meals were complimented with

a dazzling assortment of wines (I don’t think I’ve drunk so much wine in the space of a weekend before). Château Les Carrasses is a rare find in a stunning setting with amazing food and drink and friendly attentive staff who work hard to make sure you have a great time. And we certainly did.

THE MAGIC AND THE

MEMORIES

Greece is much more than a holiday destination for Brigit Grant... it is home

I

n the summer of 1975 travel changed for my family. Harold Wilson was prime minister, the Bay City Rollers were high in the charts, but, more importantly, my mother was reading holiday brochures instead of novels. This led to her fascination with all things Hellenic, and in late July, as my school friends set off for Birchington and Bournemouth, my family boarded a plane to the Greek island of Rhodes. That first trip to the largest of the Dodecanese islands remains a vivid memory and not because my little sister dropped a toy Womble down the pocket of a pool table. It was because my mother cried when we left. She had fallen in love with a place that was once home to ancient wonder Colossus and the conquering Knights of St John of Jerusalem. Going forward, it would be our home every summer. It would be easier to list what didn’t happen on the magical island of Rhodes during those

The Kahal Shalom synagogue (circa 1557) opens as often as possible and we joined a jolly Shavuot service held by an American Greek chazan on the eve of his son’s barmitzvah. To see such vitality in this ancient building was poignant, as around the corner, the Square of the Jewish Martyrs has a monument commemorating the 1,604 Jews killed during the Holocaust. That this centrepiece exists at all is another reason to love the generous people on this island, which is wildly popular with Israelis who live so close and must appreciate the use of Ivrit besides other languages on public signs. For the second part of our stay, we were at the Lindos Royal Hotel at Vilcha near Lindos itself. The splendid colonial-style architecture that provides footbridges across the winding pool is only outshone by the natural beauty of the Aegean Sea behind. Our comfortable, but more basic room lacked powerful air con and though the all-inclusive buffet was tasty and plentiful,

While saluting the merits of all-inclusive packages for families, there’s a lot to see outside good hotels, and Lindos is the jewel in the crown. A turquoise bay with white-washed buildings scattered across a hillside topped by the acropolis is the aesthetic overture to a village with a maze of cobbled streets filled with lazy cats, donkey transportation, lush bougainvillea and the best shops. At night, restaurants stylishly reinventing the national cuisine transform the landscape by hosting on the rooftops and, if you are lucky enough to stay, don’t miss the sunrise. Celebs love Lindos and we watched David Gilmour of Pink Floyd walk his daughter to her wedding and designer Jasper Conran get angry with his boat, although it’s the warm generous Greeks who are the real stars on this island. On our last day, we were on Pallas Beach, where golden sand borders the stillest sea and the tavernas are world-class. Reluctant to say goodbye, I waited for the beach to clear before heading up the hill. When I looked back at the view below and saw my dad sitting by the shore smiling. I can’t think of a better place to leave him.

Fully staffed and serviced with private butlers, chef, housekeepers, concierge service and security, the properties cater for families who enjoy holidaying together, as well as those wanting to host an intimate wedding for up to 30 guests, although additional invitees can be catered for. Last year, Ani Villas hosted its first seder in Anguilla for a guest who wanted to take the bitterness out of the maror by breaking matzah by the Caribbean sea. “Typically we work with local Chabads on the koshering of our kitchens, replacing diningware, cookware and importing all meats, dairy and other certified products not otherwise available locally,” explains Ira, who, depending

on the size and requirements of each group, will have a mashgiach to supervise. “But we don’t compromise on our gourmet standard.” In an enviroment previously reserved for billionaires and oligarchs, this would be unlikely and although this kind of bespoke experience doesn’t come cheap, the real value is obvious when you are being served cocktails by a personal butler in a secluded cove on Koh Yao Noi n Thailand. Chefs, mixologists, butlers, fitness instructions, children activities coordinators, massage therapists and housekeeping is all part of the privilege, along with floodlit tennis courts, infinite pools, ocean suites and daily activity programmes for the children. Organised travel requires a woman’s touch. Brigit Grant talks to Naomi Mendel

en might believe they decide on holiday destinations, but women know otherwise. Females are always on a fact-finding mission for suitable vacations as, unlike men, they realise the importance of inter-connecting rooms for children, access to the beach with a pushchair and journey times to the airport. We’re generalising, of course, as men have successfully navigated the world, but ask one about his last holiday and he will tell you it was “good”, “ok-ish” or “very expensive”. Asked the same question, a woman will reveal every

detail of her excursion and pass on any business cards for bars and restaurants. Knowing this makes Naomi Mendel the obvious choice for creating your holiday plans, as she is a personal travel consultant at Hays Travel, which is the largest independent agent in the UK. Naomi has been simplifying the vacation process for years, and her clients rely on her for competitive rates on flights and hotels across the globe, as well as to source package holidays both near and far. Israel which is a personal favourite. “We offer the keenest prices and a very personal service ,” she says, adding: “Something one won’t get by booking on the internet.” Like her male counterparts across the travel business, Naomi knows that the industry is very fickle and a change in trends depends on so many factors. “Until a few years ago, Turkey was probably one of the most popular destinations,” she says. “Because of the political unrest this has changed, although it is hopefully beginning to pick up again.” “British Airways is also having a bad time at the moment, owing to their computer problems a few weeks ago and many people are saying ‘I won’t go with British Airways again’, but from my experience, this is something that will pass with time and be forgotten.” The most obvious change has been the rise in prices since Brexit, which has affected the exchange rate. “Many families are going for an ‘all-inclusive” arrangement so at least one knows everything is paid for in advance. No one wants nasty surprises at the end for ice creams, drinks meals out, etc.” This year, apart from Israel, some of Naomi’s most popular summer holiday destinations are Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus and the United States. Cruises are also in demand, as are city breaks in Barcelona, Seville, Madrid, Venice, Florence and Rome. Naomi can tell you a lot about Reykavik in Iceland, as it grows in appeal

DAGENHAM Georgia Walters meets East London’s travel expert

IT IS EASY to assume that travel agencies are no longer needed as you can book everything online. This couldn’t be further from the truth. If you’re looking for a cruise, a multicentre trip or a great deal, you need to talk to an expert. Farley Shelkin established Dagenham Travel in the 1980s to share his expertise with the travelling public – and his services are still very much in demand today. “Before computers were so prominent, the public had no choice but to use a travel agent for everything from hotel and flights down to transfers and excursions, but now we can book much of our holiday expediently online,” says Farley. Nonetheless, travel agencies

are great for getting us holiday deals we cannot obtain online, and are still valuable for booking cruises and tailor-made trips. For someone booking a multi-centre holiday, the expertise of a travel agent is indispensable. Before he set up his own agency, Farley worked at Thomas Cook’s head offices in Mayfair and then went on to manage a succession of high street agencies. Working in a competitive market, he had the task of establishing his agency alongside six others in the area. Starting out with only a few local clients, the agency needed to expand. To achieve prominence, it set out to offer a really personal service and put out a series of adverts publishing Farley’s home number for those who required

his expertise on evenings and weekends. “From the day these adverts were released, the phone was endlessly ringing with travellers keen to secure last-minute deals, “ he says. Thirty-four years later, Dagenham Travel prevails as the only travel agency still operating in the area. Farley has two full-time staff who have both been with him for nearly 20 years. More recently, the industry has seen changes in the holiday choices people make. “The falling pound has naturally pushed up prices, so people are even more keen to look for deals,” he says. “Budapest and Prague are good value for city breaks, but our most popular destinations are always America, Greece, Spain, Israel and the Canaries, and cruises are highly sought-after.

“When it comes to winter breaks, our clients head for the sun – mainly the Caribbean and South Africa, or the Canaries if they don’t want to travel so far. The great new destination is the Cape Verde islands – these are a great choice as the flight is only six hours and the winter climate is really favourable. “I still get a buzz when I get a call from a client after returning from their holiday telling me what a great time they had,” says Farley. “This is what it’s all about for me.” A five-star all-inclusive holiday in Cape Verde for 10 nights starts from £2,000 including flights and transfers. EVERYONE HAS a different idea about what makes a holiday great. For some, it is rising earlier than they do for work, taking a lengthy coach ride to a historical site and then climbing a rocky promontory for an unmissable view. Others like a stroll to the pool to continue sleeping, while a few are just grateful to see a kids’ club, a kitchen they don’t have to cook in and a number for room service. Some families include people who want all of the above and more, which means they need to holiday with Laurent Cohen at KDeluxe Easy Kosher Holidays. Known for providing everything his vacationing clients could wish for, Laurent’s business has flourished over the past eight years with the growth of his special programmes built around the Jewish festival calendar and enjoyed on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. Women don’t have to be convinced by the appeal of KDeluxe Holidays because they can enjoy the chagim as much as their husbands and children without the angst of preparing all the meals. The free catering pass is possible because Laurent offers a strictly kosher culinary experience under the supervision of

orientated mega-ships though; there are a select group of luxury cruise lines whose main objective is to fulfil your every wish. Leave your wallet at home, and set sail with Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea Cruises, Seabourn or Crystal Cruises, where all your on-board dining and drinks are included (and even shore excursions with Regent Seven Seas). Relax on board with spacious pool decks and some of the biggest cabins afloat, where you can sit back with a freshly made cocktail – complimentary, of course. Or enjoy Michelin star dining in one of the many on-board dining venues, where tipping is neither required nor expected. If you are lucky enough to have sailed the seven seas and want to try something a

bit different, why not try a river cruise? The small, boutique ships are perfectly designed to navigate the winding locks and rivers of Europe, Asia and Africa, taking you to the heart of the country you’re sailing through. Perfect if you really want to immerse yourself in local culture, gastronomy and history of the world – most river cruise lines will offer complimentary shore excursions, and even bicycles if you want to explore on your own with Forever Cruises waiting for you. A WATER GARDEN

MOMENT Bournemouth is still a favourite – and one hotel in particular Dear Chanie A big thank you to you and all your staff for providing us with such a comfortable stay last night. The buffet dinner was delicious, with so much variety and choice. The self-service breakfast was ideal and the freshly-made sandwiches for lunch today were perfect. You were all so accommodating and went above and beyond to make us feel at home. We’ll definitely spread the word about your establishment! Can we please book for next year?! Shabbat Shalom Anna As most of us are more prolific when it comes to writing letters of complaint, how nice it must have been for the owners of the Water Garden Hotel to receive the above. Not that letters enthusing about the Bournemouth property

are in short supply, as most guests readily comment on the quality of service, food and general ambience after a restful stay. Under the supervision of Rabbi Yosef Alperowitz of Chabad of Bournemouth, the hotel, which is close to the East Cliff and beach, boasts a charming garden, a great restaurant run by a head chef who likes to push the boundaries and, unusually, for those who like to snack there is an in-house deli. Water Garden Hotel is also extremely affordable and for those who would rather holiday in the UK this summer, Bournemouth is familiar and welcoming for families who are welcome at this hotel, which has rooms large enough to accommodate them. Travel / Exotic Kosher Eating

THE EXOTIC KOSHER Sri Lanka

EXPERIENCE

Combining long haul with your dietary requirements is no longer an issue, reports Brigit Grant

I

f you are kosher but have the travel passions of Phileas Fogg, there’s a man you need to meet. Ben Robbins loved holidays almost as much as he adored food, but when he realised his kosher commitments were quashing his exotic expedition ambitions, he came up with a solution that led to the formation of his company, Bespoke Kosher Travel. The best way to explain Bespoke Kosher Travel is with the example of newly-weds Tara and Josh. The couple – like so many before them – wanted to honeymoon in Sri Lanka. “They had heard from friends how amazing it was and how the country offered so much,” volunteers Ben. “But as they kept stricly kosher, the thought of a honeymoon eating tuna and crackers was far from the dream reality. And then they contacted us.” Bespoke Kosher Travel planned their programme, discussed a route, the activities they wanted to do and where they would spend Shabbat. Once this was finalised, they explained how the food would work and what was on offer. They discussed menus and finalised a plan. Then their experts worked with suppliers to ensure the food was prepared and delivered to each location for the couple when they arrived. Food was labelled and sealed for their ease. “We worked with the hotels to explain how the food is stored and heated,” explains Ben. “We were in discussion with the clients at each step and they enjoyed hot kosher meals every day, and on Shabbat were treated to a full Shabbat experience in the Sri Lankan jungle – and, most importantly, we did so working on the budget they had set aside for their trip.” Bespoke Kosher Travel didn’t just take care of the food; it organised the transfers, activities and the guides, and was on call throughout the trip to ensure the honeymoon followed the dream to the letter. On the couple’s return, Josh wrote: ‘We wanted to enjoy an adventurous honey-

moon, in a place neither of us had visited while enjoying some luxury and good food. We thought satisfying all of these ideals would be impossible, but Ben and his team worked tirelessly to ensure we could achieve everything we set out to do. They made themselves contactable at all times of the day, they were attentive and in constant communication with both us and the staff in Sri Lanka. Thank you so much! We look forward to using you again.’ From one satisfied customer to another planning a once in a lifetime family holiday to South Africa. “There were eight of them travelling and they wanted to ensure they had the best at every turn as they were unlikely to ever do this again,” recalls Ben. “Intially they thought that planning a trip like this in South Africa would be easy with kosher food readily available, but then realised it was a more daunting task. This is what we do best.” Bespoke Kosher Travel booked a beautiful safari lodge and provided hot meals every day and flavoursome lunches to eat on the go as they took in the wonders of a safari park. “Then they went to Cape Town to enjoy a stay in a private villa with enough rooms

for all, a driver to ensure they saw all the sites, including Table Mountain and Cape Point,” says Ben. “Once again, fresh meals were delivered – taking the pressure off the family and meant mum did not have to worry about cooking or tidying up. Everything was handled and all details were taken care of by us. The itinerary we planned meant there was something for everyone and even included a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium for the little ones.” On their return, the clients wrote to thank Ben telling him: ‘We never imagined travelling with the whole family could be so easy. Being a Jewish

mother, I was, of course, worried about everything, but from the moment we landed until the moment we left, I did not have to think or worry about anything – everything went to plan and was like clockwork. Bespoke Kosher Travel took care of every detail – they cared for every one of our party like we were their own family. We will definitely be recommending them to our friends and family.’ So now aspiring Phileas Foggs who keep kosher know where to go.
